Diet and exercise were rarely on Justin Fisher’s mind. After all, he was only in his 30s, and he was a busy audio engineer crisscrossing the country with R&B musicians.
But when COVID-19 forced him to switch gears to become his mother’s full-time caregiver, Justin decided to take stock of his own health. It wasn’t promising.
Justin’s cholesterol was sky-high, and tests found his heart wasn’t pumping sufficiently—a sign of coronary artery disease. Doctors performed a cardiac catheterization and found three significant blockages in his arteries that needed immediate intervention. He was, as his cousin told him, “a walking massive heart attack.”
But thanks to three stents, medication, and a renewed dedication to self-care, Justin’s heart health is on the upswing.
“Being a caretaker for my mom, that put a different perspective on going to the doctor and making sure I’m OK,” he said. “I’m paying more attention to how I’m feeling.”
